Promotion orders of 32 policemen cancelled

GUJRANWALA, April 30: Regional Police Officer (RPO) DIG Zulfikar Ali Cheema has cancelled the promotion orders of at least 32 police officials of Hafizabad district after an inquiry here on Wednesday.

Former Hafizabad district police officer (DPO) Iftikhar Hussain Tarrar had allegedly promoted these police officials after accepting gratification and issued backdated orders when he had been transferred.

New DPO Muhammad Afzal Butt reported the alleged maladministration to RPO Cheema who ordered an inquiry into the matter.

Acting upon the findings of the probe, the RPO later cancelled all the promotion orders instantly and informed the higher authorities. He warned that no such maladministration or corruption would be tolerated in the department.

HONOUR KILLING: A man killed his wife and her alleged paramour after finding them in compromising condition in Bhuda Rajawa village near Ghakhar on Wednesday.

Muhammad Younis had suspicion that his wife had an affair with Habibur Rehman of the same village. On Wednesday, Younis found both of them in compromising condition on which he axed both of them to death and fled. The police later arrested Younis and started investigations.

100 released: The district and sessions judge released around 100 prisoners involved in petty offences during his routine visit to the local jail on Wednesday.

During his visit, District and Sessions Judge Arshad Mehmood Cheema directed jail authorities to prepare the list of inmates incarcerated in petty offences and later ordered the release of 100 of them.

The sessions judge also inspected various barracks including the women’s barrack and listened to the problems of prisoners.

He ordered jail authorities to provide better facilities to inmates in accordance with the jail manual. Jail Superintendent Kamran Anjum and other senior officers accompanied the sessions judge.

CONVICTED: A local court sentenced two men to death and another to life imprisonment in two separate cases here on Wednesday.

Amjad Ali was sentenced to death and fined Rs100,000 for killing his wife Saima over a domestic issue on Feb 12, 2008.

Muhammad Nasir was sentenced to death while Ata Mustafa to life imprisonment with Rs400,000 fine for killing Ali Rana, a Class-X student of Mandiala Warraich, over enmity on May 9, 2006.

ROBBERY: Robbers stormed a plastic pots manufacturing unit on Ghoray Shah Road here on Wednesday and fled after collecting pots worth Rs2.4 million.

As many 14 outlaws stormed the factory owned by Navid Ahmad, took godown keeper Ehsanullah hostage and tied him with ropes. Later, they loaded the pots on three vehicles and fled. The police are investigating.

CRACKDOWN: The police claimed on Wednesday to have busted 37 gamblers and 38 addicts during a crackdown and seized huge quantity of narcotics from them.

RPO Zulfikar Cheema had directed his subordinates to launch the crackdown on criminals throughout the district.
