Aussies reach four-nation hockey final

DARWIN (Australia), May 1: Olympic champions Australia reached the final of the four-nation field hockey tournament with a 4-2 win over South Korea here on Thursday.

It was the Australians’ second win of the Darwin tournament after downing China 3-2 on Wednesday’s opening night.

Australia defeated the Koreans 4-3 last Sunday to claim the first of the two four-nation hockey tournaments.

Australia, leading 2-1 at halftime, swept to a 3-1 lead shortly after the break through Des Abbott.

The Koreans pulled one back with Jang Jong-Hyun converting a penalty corner in the 50th minute, but the home side wrapped it up with a penalty corner from David Guest five minutes later.

South Korea can clinch a place with Australia in Sunday’s final if they avoid defeat to China in Saturday’s third round, while Australia take on India.

In Thursday’s early match, China and India drew 4-4.—AFP
