Grue eyes feature event at Lahore races today

LAHORE, May 10: Four-year-old colt Grue looks set to win the feature event, a class four handicap race to go over 1,100 metres when the day/night Lahore Summer Meeting gets underway at the Racecourse on Sunday.

Grue, the colt from Beadouine Invader out-of-Varrio, ran a good race last Sunday, finishing third behind Apex and Lovely Dunit. If he runs like that again, he has a good chance to edge out his six rivals, some of them running after a long absence from the track.

Judging by form and recent performance, four-year-old filly Bright Flame, who has to her credit a facile victory on the trot, will be his main challenger in the sixth and last race of the day.

Four-year-old colt Will He Wish and five-year-old horse Munsaf look good to fight for the spoils in the fifth and supporting event, the Multan Plate, a class five, division II handicap race run over 1,100 metres. Both ran in a race finishing second and third, respectively. Will He Wish, has been promoted in the weight scales at nine stones and two pounds, which brings him at par with Munsaf, the latter having an edge in handicap.

Will He Wish is owned by Khawaja M. Arif, a Lahore Race Club (LRC) steward, who is in London these days for health reasons but is expected back next week after his successful heart surgery.

Three-year-old bay filly Majestic Desert, who was beaten to second position on her previous outing last week, should make amends this time and win the fourth event, a class VI, division I-A race run over the 900 metres distance.

Love Minister and Chimera, who have shown good form recently, would be her close rivals.

Striker, Divine Jury and Dream Act attract attention in the nine runners drawn for the third race, a class VI, division I-B to be run over the 900 metres distance. They should fight for the spoils with the better rider having an advantage due to the short sprinting distance.

The six-year-old gelding Dam Dama Dam, who had a facile victory on the trot will be going all out to make it a two-in-a-row. He is contesting in the Lodhran Plate, class VI, division II race to be contested over the distance of 900 metres.

Three-year-old filly Dream Memories and the filly So Romantic are the next best in the field of eight acceptors, barring last-minute withdrawals.

Victory King, Shahbaz Love and Sher-e-Lahore are the pick of seven runners in the first race, a class VI, division III and IV combined event. This should be a closely contested race if all get a level start. The start matters the most in an over 900 metres race.

A card of six events will go through in the day/night summer meeting.

The first four races will go over 900 metres while the remaining two will be contested in the over 1,100 metres distance. The first race will be held at 5.00pm.
