Punjab govt to provide full protocol to Justice Iftikhar

LAHORE, May 20: The government of Punjab will provide full security and protocol to deposed chief justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry and other judges during the lawyers’ convention and long march across the province.

Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah Khan told a news conference on Tuesday the PML-N considered the lawyers’ movement a struggle for a noble cause and had supported it at every stage.

He said the government would also help the lawyers in organising the conventions and the long march in the province.

Rana Sanaullah said the PML-N considered the action of Nov 3, 2007, as illegal and unconstitutional. He praised the lawyers for waging their struggle peacefully.

He said there was no possibility of violence by participants of the long march on June 10, but the government had the information that some certain elements might try to create problem. He said that such elements would be ‘crushed’.

Rana Sanaullah said the PML-N would support the stance of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) against the ‘minus-one or minus-two’ formula for reinstatement of judges.

Commenting on the proposed 18th constitutional amendment, he said his party would give its position after the PPP made the package public.—APP
