Pakistan elected to UN rights panel

UNITED NATIONS, May 21: The United Nations General Assembly on Wednesday re-elected Pakistan as a member of the Human Rights Council for a three-year term (2008-2011) despite a vicious campaign by some western nations’ non-governmental organisations and watchdog groups.

Six Asian countries, including Pakistan, were competing for four seats reserved for the region. Pakistan secured 114 votes to win the seat, along with Japan, Bahrain and Republic of Korea. Ninety-seven votes were required to secure majority in the 192-member UN General Assembly.
