Salman claims under-18 title: Karachi Table Tennis
KARACHI, May 28: Junior international Salman Shahid inflicted straight defeat on Tabish Khursheed in the boys’ under-18 singles final to claim his maiden domestic title in the 36th Karachi Table Tennis Championships at the Islamia Club the other day.
Salman, 15, who toured Dubai with the Pakistan junior team two years back, posted an 11-8, 13-11, 11-6 victory to deny his opponent from completing a triple crown.
Khursheed has won a double crown in the ongoing tournament by picking up the boys’ under-12 and under-15 titles.
Meanwhile, a long power breakdown interrupted the schedule on the penultimate day as players desperately kept waiting for their matches in absence of a generator.
According to organising secretary Arif Khan, the power went off at around 4.45pm and was restored at 9.00pm as players entered the arena to complete pre-finals of the remaining events.
Nine of the total 15 finals have been held by Wednesday. The remaining six finals are to be played on Thursday, the concluding day of the event.
The winners of the men open ranking and women open ranking will receive Rs20,000 apiece while the runner-up in the four events will fetch Rs10,000 apiece. The losing semi-finalists of the four categories are to get Rs5,000 apiece.
The boys and girls who have won different age group titles will be rewarded in kind.
