KARACHI, May 30: The process of admissions to masters and diploma courses under the Karachi University’s Evening Programme 2008-09 session begins on June 2 with the issuance of forms and prospectuses. The classes will commence on July 1.

Director of the programme Prof M. Abu Zar Wajidi told newsmen here on Friday that around 2,500 graduates would be enrolled in masters classes this year as compared to 1,646 enrolled last year.

Prof Wajidi said that the subjects being offered for the two-year masters courses included Applied Physics (with specialization in electronics), Criminological Sciences, Economics & Finance, Environmental Sciences, Health & Population Sciences, Public Administration, Remote Sensing & Human Resources, Geographical Information Systems, Education, English, Applied Statistics, Transport Management, International Relations, Mass Communications and Petroleum Technology.

In addition, a three-year MBA in Banking & Finance and two-year masters in Human Resource Management are being introduced for the first time under the evening program.

For one-year diploma courses, he said, the subjects offered included Local Government, Audio & Speech Pathology and Inclusive Education (Special Education), Criminology, Contemporary Arabic, Economics & Finance, Environmental Sciences, Industrial and Organisational Psychology, Investigative Psychology, Petroleum Technology, Mathematics, Quranic Arabic Language and Persian.

The minimum eligibility for admission to the masters and diploma courses is second division, he said.

The booklet containing all information about the courses could be obtained from the UBL’s Silver Jubilee Gate branch for Rs500 from June 2 to 12 between 9am and 5pm or the bank’s Campus branch between 5pm and 7:30pm. June 12 is the last date for the submission of applications along with copies of relevant documents.

According to Prof Wajidi, Science department classes are held from 3.30pm to 8.30pm and those of Arts and Management Sciences from 5pm to 8:30pm.

Prof Wajidi, who is also Dean Faculty of Management and Administrative Sciences, said that the KU evening programme had already produced 16,000 masters degree-holders.

HSC exams

The Higher Secondary School (HSC) annual examinations 2008 enter the second phase on June 10, adds APP.

According to the Board of Intermediate Education Karachi (BIEK) Chairman Anwar Ahmed Zai, examinations of the Arts Group will be conducted in the second phase.

Around 52,000 regular and private candidates will appear in the examinations to be held in 41 centres set up in various parts of the metropolis.

The BIEK chairman stated here on Friday that admit cards of the regular candidates were dispatched to their respective colleges and of the private candidates to their residences.

He advised those candidates who did not receive the admit cards by June 3 to approach the BIEK office.

He said that a notification regarding the formation of “vigilance teams” to check use of unfair means in the examinations would be issued by June 5.

In the first phase of the process, the BIEK conducted examinations for Pre-engineering, Pre-medical, Home Economics and Science General Groups from May 13. The exams are about to conclude.

A total of 77,662 candidates are appearing in these examinations for which 89 centres were set up in the city.

In the Commerce Group examinations which commenced on May 17, a total of 72,960 candidates are appearing.

A record number of 215,000 candidates are taking the intermediate examinations this year.
