PML-N has fundamental differences over package

LAHORE, June 6: The PML-N has fundamental differences over the PPP's package of constitutional amendments and has, therefore, not accepted the draft in toto given by the federal law minister, a party spokesman said on Friday.

Mr Siddiqul Farooq told Dawn that the PPP leadership had also realized that the draft had attracted the worst criticism from most segments of society.

"We can't accept the restoration of judiciary through a constitutional amendment as it would be tantamount to accepting Gen Musharraf's unconstitutional action of Nov 3 as part of the Constitution".

He said the PML-N also could not give indemnity to Gen Musharraf's unconstitutional acts because such a step would pave the way for future adventurers.

Mr Siddidul Farooq said his party would propose amendments to the draft package and also give rationale. The PML-N committee constituted for the purpose would finalize its recommendations by Tuesday, he said.

The committee, he said, would hand over its recommendations to Mian Nawaz Sharif who would then convene a meeting of the party's central working committee and the parliamentary party. The proposals finalzed at the meeting would be given in black and white to the PPP leadership, he said.

Asked if the procedure would not delay the reinstatement of the deposed judges, the PML-N spokesman said since the PPP wanted to table the proposed package in parliament after the budget session "we have ample time to evolve consensus". He said the judges could be restored through the formula agreed upon in the Murree Declaration.
