Verdict in Asif case expected today

LAHORE, June 8: The decision in disgraced Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Asif’s case has been deferred till Monday as the public prosecutor has sent the case to Dubai’s attorney general on Sunday.

The decision whether Asif, who is allegedly involved in possession of a prohibited substance, will be deported from Dubai or to face jail imprisonment was expected on Sunday after the public prosecutor had received all lab reports.

“According to latest information the case has been referred to the attorney general and we now expect any decision that will come out on Monday,” a Pakistan Cricket Board spokesman said.

Asif was detained at Dubai airport last Sunday after the banned substance found in his wallet. Asif was coming from India to Lahore via Dubai after playing in the Indian Premier League (IPL). As the bowler had to stay in Dubai for some hours, he preferred to go out of the airport to spend the time. For that he had to go through the process of immigration and customs and was caught with the substance.

Though the PCB and government launched efforts for immediate release of the bowler, the strict law of the land futile all attempts. However, the government is still trying to get Asif deportation from Dubai and to deal with his case in Pakistan according to the laws.
