HYDERABAD: Foul play alleged as man dies in asylum

HYDERABAD, June 20: A mentally retarded young patient died in mysterious circumstances in government-run Sir Cowasjee Institute of Psychiatry here on Friday as his family refused to accept hospital administration’s claim that he had committed suicide by hanging himself with the door.

Ali Jan Qalandarani, 22, son of Mohammad Saleem Brohi, was shifted to the institute by his family on June 12. He was resident of tehsil Hub Chowki, district Balochistan as he used to become too aggressive. According to his cousin Abdul Sattar Qalandarani, deceased’s younger brother Ali Jan was staying in the institute and he was asked to leave his brother by hospital administration after his condition improved.

“Why did doctor tell Ali Jan to leave the hospital if he was a chronic lunatic?”, asked Abdul Sattar Qalandarani while speaking to Dawn. He refused to accept hospital authorities claim that he had committed suicide by hanging himself with door of his ward by taking off waist band (kamar band) from his shalwar.

“Blood was oozing from his head and I believe that the wound will need 15 to 20 stitches”, he said. He was quite angry over hospital doctors’ attitude on the ground that they didn’t pay attention to the deceased’s body which remained without clothes.

“Event insects had started running on it”, he complained. He said that he had told the MS how could he commit suicide when his height is bigger than the door. “No one was listening to us as the SHO concerned was having tea with MS”, he said.
