Rizwan, Atiq in badminton doubles final

KARACHI, June 20: National doubles champion and top seed Rizwan Azam and Mohammad Atiq qualified for the final of men’s doubles event at the Nepal badminton championship in Kathmandu on Friday.

Rizwan and Atiq thrashed the Indian pair of Francis Alwin and Gopan Shankar in straight sets (21-5, 21-10).

National champion Wajid Ali bowed out from the singles event after losing to India’s Vidyadhar in the semi-final.

Wajid won the first set 21-15 but the Indian bounced back to win the next two sets 21-17 and 21-13.

In the quarter-finals of mixed doubles, Rizwan Azam and Sara Mohmand ousted Nepal’s Shreshta Sujana and Chand Pankaj in straight sets (21-10, 21-14).

While Mohammad Atiq and Palwasha Basheer defeated another local pair of Mehata Indra and Khaling Samjhana 21-18, 18-21, 21-17.—PPI
