Komal shines as Colony Club outplay Dolphins: Inter-club women’s soccer

KARACHI, June 20: Colony Women’s Football Club beat Karachi Dolphins 3-0 while the match between Diya Women’s Football Club and Karachi Kickers ended in a 0-0 draw on day one of the first national Inter-club women’s foot-ball championship’s Karachi matches, played at the Colony Sports Stadium and the Aga Khan Gymkhana on Friday.

The one-sided encounter between Colony WFC and Karachi Dolphins at the Colony Sports Stadium saw Colony Sports striker Komal taking the pressure off her side from the very start when she scored the first goal in the match’s 4th minute.

The following 31 minutes saw Karachi Dolphins tiring themselves out in order to equalise but to no avail. The score remained 1-0 at halftime.

The second half saw the Colony girls on attack once again with their substitute midfielder Farah striking in the 41st minute. This was followed by striker Komal’s straight shot into the net, leaving no chance for Dolphins’ goalkeeper Nazia to make a save, in the 47th minute. There was no coming back for Karachi Dolphins after that.

Besides being the first Group ‘D’ encounter, the match had another significance to it as well. It was the first national-level match to have been supervised by a lady referee Ms Yasmeen Zareen with Jawaid Bangash and Imran Hussain fulfilling the duty of assistant referees.

The second match between Diya WFC and Karachi Kickers, cited as two of the strongest sides in the group, saw Diya’s defenders not letting the ball come even near their half and their attackers on constant attack, though wasting many good chances. Still the match, which carried on mostly in Karachi Kickers’ half thoughout the 70-minute duration, ended without either side being able to score.

The match was supervised by Abdul Kareem with assistance from Dad Rehman and Fareed Ahmed.

The next two matches are scheduled for Sunday after Saturday’s rest day.

Sunday’s fixtures:

Karachi Dolphins vs Karachi Kickers at Colony Sports Stadium at 9.00am. Sindh Soccerites vs Diya WFC at Colony Sports Stadium at 5.30pm.
