Wapda win National judo championship

KARACHI, June 29: Wapda won the National Judo Championship that concluded at the Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education (BISE) indoor hall in Abbottabad on Sunday.

Scoring 37 points through their six gold medals bagged by Waris Ali (66kg), Ayatullah (66kg), Zeeshan Butt (73kg), Saeed (81kg), Ghazanfar Ali (90kg) and Muzzafar (under-100kg), two silver pocketed by Mohammad Sadad (50kg) and Sharif Masih (56kg), and one bronze contributed by Shehzad (above-100kg), Wapda left all its other nine opponent teams way behind in the three-day championship which began on Friday.

Pakistan Railways (three gold, three silver and three bronze), who were neck and neck with Wapda on Saturday came second with 27 points followed by Army who with one gold, four silver and five bronze ended up third with 22 points.

As for the rest of teams in the competition, Punjab stood fourth, Police fifth, Balochistan sixth, Sindh seventh, NWFP eighth and FATA ninth, respectively.

NWFP Sports Minister Syed Aqil, the chief guest on the occasion, gave away medals and cash prizes to the position holders.

The event, organised by the Pakistan Judo Federation (PJF), was participated by over 100 judokas.
