‘Judges issue more important than impeachment’

LAHORE, July 9: A Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) leader says his party will not lay an equal stress on the impeachment of President Musharraf but the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and the PML-N should resolve the judges’ issue as early as possible because of the serious challenges the country faced.

He said on Wednesday PML-N ministers who had quit the federal cabinet on May 12 would not rejoin the cabinet unless there was some agreement on the deposed judges' issue.

He said his party would not set any deadline for the purpose.

PML-N sources said a meeting between Nawaz Sharif and Asif Ali Zardari could be productive only if the PPP co-chairman carried some solid proposals on the judges' issue.

They said the PML-N would not rejoin the federal cabinet unless the PPP restored the judges of superior courts along the lines of Sharif’s suggestions.

There are reports that the PPP now plans to fill cabinet posts.

It is said about half a dozen ministers would be taken from the PPP while one ministry would go each to the Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-F and the Awami National Party.

PPP leaders did not fill the slots vacated by the PML-N ministers, hoping that differences between the two coalition partners would ultimately be settled and those who tendered resignations would resume their functions in the cabinet. Additional charge of these portfolios was given to sitting ministers in an attempt to make the PML-N leadership believe that the PPP was still keen on keeping its alliance with them intact.

The PML-N also did not lose hope, and it was for this reason that despite quitting the cabinet, the party did not sit on the opposition benches.
