KARACHI, July 14: The Sindh High Court restrained the police from arresting Akhtar Khan Tessori, his two sons and three other members of the Tessori family, pending hearing of an application for protection from arbitrary arrest and for unhindered access to their residential and business premises.

The application, moved by Zaitoon Begum, mother-in-law of Akhtar Khan Tessori and grandmother of Kamran Khan Tessori, through advocate M. Ashraf Kazi said the members of the family were being threatened by police. It alleged that the present regime, which was ‘hostile’ to Akhtar and Kamran Tessori, has posted police guards at their residence ‘Jabeen House’ bearing No 95, Khayaban-i-Ghazi, Phase VI, Defence, and at Tessori Jewellers, Zaibunnisa Street, without any lawful justification. If any case is registered against any member of the family, the application said, the police should be asked to bring it on record.

The applicant requested the court to order the police to call back the guards and allow free access to the owners to enter and put their residential and business premises to normal use. She specifically sought court protection for Akhtar Tessori, his wife Kausar Jabeen, sons Kamran Tessori, Imran Tessori, and Kamran’s wife and son.

The application came up before a division bench consisting of Justices Mrs Qaiser Iqbal and Khwaja Naveed Ahmed on Monday and it issued notices to the respondent home department and police officers for July 23. In the meantime, the bench asked the police to refrain from arresting the six persons named in the application. The respondents were also directed to produce copies of the first information reports, if any, registered against the members of Tessori family and allow them to carry on their normal business and other activities.

The application recalled that Kamran Tessori was kidnapped for ransom by ‘certain individuals’ on June 15 but was freed and dropped in front of his shop in Karachi on June 18.

Meanwhile, the division bench on Monday allowed the Anti-terrorism Court Karachi to hear bail application of Shahid Rind, the man arrested in a kidnapping for ransom case and identified by police as Bahadur Brohi, the brother of notorious criminal Mashooq Brohi, adds PPI.

The order came on Rind’s criminal bail application stating that the trial court was not entertaining his bail plea because of a stay granted by the SHC earlier.
