Probables named for TT camp

KARACHI, July 22: The Pakistan Table Tennis Federation (PTTF) has picked four probables, including two girls, for camp in preparation for the October’s Commonwealth Games being held in the Indian city of Pune.

They were selected at the end of one-day trials held at the Wapda Gymnasium in Lahore on Sunday. As many as 24 boys and 20 girls who were under-16 on Jan 1, 2008, appeared in the trials.

The selected players have been asked to report to director PSB Coaching Centre here on Wednesday where they will undergo training under the supervision of foreign coaches.

The PTTF president, S.M. Sibtain, has made it clear that the selection made on merit is subject to verification of age, maintenance of physical fitness, top playing form and discipline in the camp besides punctuality in each training session.

“Wrist tests of the players would be conducted if the need arise,” he told Dawn on Tuesday.

He disclosed that a boy and a girl will be picked on the basis of performance during the camp.

The top eight boys and girls who played the final league are as follows:

Boys: 1. Waqas Ayub (Islamabad), 2. Abdullah Naeem (Railways), 3. Salman Virk (Railways), 4. Hafiz Zeeshan (Punjab), 5. Rameez Khan (Railways), 6. Shahzeb Maqbool (Punjab), 7. Abbas Ahmed (NWFP), 8. Asad Hameed (Islamabad).

Girls: 1. Maleeha Khurshed (Wapda), 2. Abeera Ali (Sindh), 3. uzammil Javed (Railways), 4. Qurratul Ain (Punjab), 5. Noreen Zulfiqar (Railways), 6. Shumaila Wasti (Railways), 7. Iqra Saeed (Sindh), 8. Sameera Aftab (Railways).
