KARACHI: Fresh anti-polio drive

KARACHI, July 25: A three-day anti-polio campaign is being launched on Sunday across the province. In this regard, a meeting between Sindh Health Minister Dr Saghir Ahmed and representatives of the WHO, Unicef and EPI was held here on Friday.

The participants discussed a strategy to cover the areas where administration of polio drops to children was refused.

The minister said that the campaign should focus on Ghotki district where a big number of polio cases had been reported. He also called for hiring the services of local language speaking people in the areas like Baldia, Site and Landhi in Karachi where people were not allowing administration of polio drops to their children.

He suggested appointment “community mobiliser” to make the anti-polio campaign in such areas a success, adding that local notables should also be taken into confidence for the purpose. He told the meeting that his department would now pursue a system of reward and punishment for the detection and eradication of polio.—APP
