KARACHI: Ex-officials to be booked in shrine construction scam

KARACHI, July 30: The senate’s standing committee on housing and works, headed by Senator Dr Mohammad Ali Brohi, has ordered registration of a corruption case against former DCO and EDO of Dadu, former managing director of the National Construction Limited (NCL) and the executive engineer concerned who are accused of being involved in malpractices and embezzlement.

The matter concerns the construction of work at the Mazar of Hazrat Lal Shahbaz Qalandar the dome of which had collapsed in 1994.

The committee reviewed the progress of reconstruction work at the mazar in Sehwan Sharif in the light of its recommendations, made during its internal meeting in Is1amabad on March 5.

The committee met here on Wednesday and issued directives to the officials concerned to expedite the construction work at Sehwan Sharif.

The committee directed the NCL to prepare PC-1 for Phase-III of the shrine’s reconstruction project in coordination with the auqaf department and the DCOs of Dadu and Jamshoro. The construction company was asked to submit the PC-1 to the planning commission by August 20 so that the work could be started soon after the Urs celebrations at the shrine.

Senator Brohi directed the officials concerned that the construction work on two mosques, which had been demolished in 1994 for the reconstruction and expansion of the shrine, be given top priority in view of the problems being faced by devotees.

The meeting was attended by Federal Minister for Housing and Works Rehmatullah Kakar as ex-officio member and Senators Hafiz Abdul Malik Qadri, Shuja-ul-Mulk, Bibi Yasmeen Shah and Sardar Mohammad Jamal Khan Leghari.—APP
