KARACHI: Opposition leader vows to defend president

KARACHI, Aug 12: Maintaining that the opposition in the Sindh Assembly would defend President Pervez Musharraf if an impeachment resolution was tabled in the assembly’s Wednesday session, leader of the opposition Jam Madad Ali said that there were more pressing issues to be dealt with.

“We will attend the session. We will defend the president,” Jam Madad told reporters after Tuesday’s session. When asked about Information Minister Shazia Marri’s claim that a few opposition members were interested in supporting the impeachment resolution, he wryly said that “a few government members might also come to us. There’s nothing wrong in saying that.”

“The Balochistan issue, problems in the NWFP, inflation and the law and order issue need more attention, not the judges or Musharraf,” the Pakistan Muslim League-F leader told the media.

He said he had paid a courtesy call to the MQM before Tuesday’s session and the impeachment issue was not discussed.

Before wrapping up the press conference, Jam Madad Ali asked the press-men a few questions: “Who is responsible for the NRO? Who benefited from it? Who was responsible for the Feb 18 elections? We need to think about these questions.”
