7 policemen booked for torturing man

RAWALPINDI, Aug 27: Seven police personnel were booked on charges of torturing a citizen, extorting money from him and implicating him in a bogus robbery case, police said.

The criminal case was registered against a deputy superintendent of police (DSP), an inspector, an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) and four constables after Sadaqat Khan, the victim, knocked the door of the court which ordered the city police officer to register a case against the accused policemen.

Sadaqat Khan, a resident of Dhoke Khabba, filed a petition with the court, saying that he was at home when some police officials in plain clothes came there on May 19 and took him to Waris Khan police station where they detained him and implicated him in a robbery case.

He said later the four police constables produced him before the then SHO Abdul Sattar who reportedly used abusive language against him and then handed him over to ASI Amjad for further investigation.

He alleged that he was produced before DSP Sultan Chadar the following day who also used abusive language against him and subjected him to mental torture.

Sadaqat said he was deprived of Rs850 and was forced to bring Rs50,000 for his safe release.

He said he was freed after his brother arranged Rs25,000 for the police. He alleged that two constables Sheeraz and Taseer tortured him during illegal detention.

Meanwhile, robbers snatched Rs400,000, gold ornaments and two vehicles in six different strikes on Tuesday, police said.

Sheikh Saeed Ahmed, the robbery victim, told Banni police that four robbers entered his house and held his family hostage.

He said the robbers snatched Rs175,000 in cash, and gold ornaments from the inmates and escaped. The value of the looted gold jewellery is yet to be ascertained.

Shoaib Adil, another robbery victim, lodged a complaint with New Town police that he was on his way home when two unidentified motorcycle riders intercepted him and snatched Rs14,500 from him.
