Sialkot, Narowal hit by power suspension

SIALKOT, May 7: Scores of residents in Sialkot and Narowal districts on Tuesday took to streets to complain against prolonged electricity and water supply suspension.

Dawn learnt that electricity supply remained suspended for six to eight hours a day in Sialkot city, Cantonment, Daska, Bhopalwala, Sambrial, Uggoki, Pasrur, Chawinda, Badiana, Shakargarh, Zafarwal, Baddomalhi and Narowal in the extreme weather.

People in industrial areas, including Pakkagarha, Model Town, People’s Colony, Civil Lines, Nishat Park, Muhammadpura, Water Works, Puran Nagar, Raam Talai, Green Wood Street, Naikapura, Rangpura, Pakpura and Hajipura, had been facing unavailability of potable water for the last two weeks due to faults in tehsil municipal’s old water turbines and tubewells.

The protesters chanted slogans against Water and Power Development Authority and municipal officials for their slackness,, demanding immediate restoration of power and water supply.

THREE SHOT DEAD: A veterinary doctor was among three people shot dead in separate incidents in the district during the last 24 hours.

Dr Abdul Hameed was on his way back home from hospital when two motorcyclists shot him dead in Bhakhiyaanwala village, tehsil Daska.

The cause of murder was stated to be old enmity.

The Motra police have registered a case with no arrest.

Youth Zafar Iqbal was shot dead by two assailants in Nizamabad village.

In Jeeto Gill village, youth Abid Husain was shot dead by six armed people over an old enmity.

Police have registered separate cases.

ABOLISHED: The CIA department in the district has been abolished under the new police system.

Sialkot SSP Muhammad Tahir told Dawn on Tuesday that the staff of the abolished department was being adjusted to various police stations in the district.

THWARTED: The Chenab Rangers on Tuesday thwarted another Indian attempt of fencing Shakargarh-Narowal sector in the Sialkot working boundary, destroying three big defensive pillars.

Official sources told Dawn that sowing and harvesting of the seasonal crops remained suspended for the 26th consecutive day due to Indian shelling.

The Indians continued shelling in Chhumb, Joriyaan (Gujrat), Bajwat, Charwa, Sucheetgarh, Harpal, Jammu, Akhnoor, Saamba, Zafarwal and Shakargarh-Narowal sectors, the sources confirmed.

No causality has yet been reported.
