Case against tehsil Nazim, staff lodged

FAISALABAD, May 8: Railway police have registered a case against city tehsil Nazim Mumtaz Ali Cheema, its public relations officer Yousaf Mufti and a dozen employees of the tehsil municipal administration on the charge of creating hurdles in the way of construction of a plaza and threatening the labour force with dire consequences.

On a complaint lodged by contractor of Dubai Plaza, which is being constructed by Pakistan Railways with the help of some foreign companies, that some employees of the tehsil municipal administration at the behest of tehsil Nazim tried to stop the construction work by force.

When contacted, the TMA spokesman and the Nazim were not available for comments. However, personal assistant of the Nazim said the plaza was being constructed without getting NOC from the TMA and approval the building plan which was an offence under the law. The contractor, instead of completing legal formalities, lodged a complaint with the Railway police, he added.

CONVICTED OF BLASPHEMY: An additional district and sessions judge on Wednesday handed down life imprisonment with Rs100,000 fine to a Christian youth in a blasphemy case.

According to the prosecution, convict Aslam Masih of Mamukanjan desecrated the Holy Quran two years ago. Some of the area people informed police which arrested him and booked under section 295-B and C.

Police shifted the convict to the district jail amid tight security.

TIMBER BURNT: Timber worth hundreds of thousands of rupees reduced to ashes when a fire broke out in a shop in the main bazaar of Samundri on Wednesday.

Short circuiting is reported to be the cause of fire. Fire brigade of the area rushed to the spot and extinguished the fire after about three hours. The loss is estimated at Rs1.5 million.
