1.3m tons wheat arrives

KARACHI, Oct 13: More than 1.306 million tons of imported wheat has arrived in the country and about 0.726 million tons is despatched to the four provinces, Utility Stores Corporation (USC) and other organisations.

Chairman Trading Corporation of Pakistan (TCP) Muhammad Saeed said on Monday that a total of about 0.900 million tons of wheat has so far been discharged at the Karachi Port and Port Qasim.

He pointed out that 207,744 tons of wheat has been despatched to NWFP, 152,372 tons to Sindh, 79,173 tons to Punjab and 46,093 tons to Balochistan province. Similarly, USC has received 45,940 tons of wheat, Azad Kashmir 19,290 tons and Northern Areas 3,226 tons. The World Food Programme has also been supplied with 12,323 tons of wheat from the imported quantity, he added.

Mr Saeed said that the transportation of wheat to various areas was in full swing after Eid holidays and both road and rail network is being utilised to despatch the commodity.

It may be noted that TCP has for awarded contracts for import of 1.750 million tons of wheat from worldwide sources. It was mandated to import 2.5 million tons of wheat to meet the domestic shortage for this vital stable food.---APP
