Larkana jewellers continue protest against robbery incident

LARKANA, Oct 22: Jewellers continued their strike against a robbery incident and kept their shops closed here on fifth consecutive day on Wednesday.

They also took out a mock funeral procession of peace in the lead of Jewellers Association president Abdul Sattar Shaikh which, after marching on the main roads of the city, assembled at Jinnah Bagh gate.

The leaders of the association in their speeches lashed out at police for its failure in recovering the looted gold articles and arresting the robbers.

Meanwhile, expressing concern over the bad state of law and order situation in Larkana, the Federation of Trade Associations had called for a shutter down strike in Larkana on Thursday.

Tarique Nazeer Shaikh, General Secretary of the Trade Associations said that the traders’ community was made hostage by small group of outlaws and extortionists. He called for restoring peace in the city.

KIDNAPPED: Meanwhile, five armed men kidnapped Chandur Kumar, the son of a rice miller, from near Fatehpur village on Larkana-Ratodero road on Wednesday.

The kidnappers injured kidnap victim’s father Seth Jago Mal with butts of a gun who resisted the move and was admitted to the Chandka Medical College Hospital while the kidnappers sped away in the car.

The kidnappers, who were chasing the victims, had intercepted their car near Fatehpur village, some 10km off Larkana, and after overpowering the inmates kidnapped Chundar Kumar, 30, sources said.

Later, Ratodero police during snap checking spotted a car on the outskirts of Ratodero and in hot pursuit reached Soomra village. Police took the white Toyota Corolla (W-9084 Sindh), into custody and arrested Abdul Qayoom Thaheem and recovered four empty magazines of Kalashnikov.

Abdul Qayoom is a resident of Pano Akil (Ghotki) and one of the members of the kidnappers’ gang who had kidnapped Chandur Kumar, police said.

Later in the evening the kidnapped victim safely reached home.

He told journalists that the kidnappers had released him near Mirokhan. He phoned his relatives from the town who had brought him to home. He was reluctant to tell anything.

DOCTOR FIRED: The managers of People’s Primary Healthcare Initiative (PPHI), Larkana, have terminated Dr Jawed Akhtar Shaikh, the in-charge medical officer of Basic Health Unit Mohenjodaro and issued show cause notices to two medical officers and paramedics on Wednesday.

District Support Manager of PPHI Ghulam Abbas Detho along with the monitoring team paid a surprise visit to the Basic Health Unit (BHU) Mohenjodaro and terminated the in charge Medical Officer on charges of late coming and not examining patients in Out Patients Department. The doctor was habitual of coming late and refusing to check the patients.

During probationary period any medical officer could be terminated without assigning any reason, said Naveed Siyal monitoring officer of PPHI.

Dr Afzal Memon, medical officer of BHU Veehar, was served with termination notice while Dr Haneef Dhamraho and Dr Naresh Lal of BHU Haji Dadhro and BHU Sehar were issued show cause notices for dereliction in duty.

CONFERENCE: The Larkana district government will organise an international conference on Moenjodaro in the last week of January 2,009 to promote the Indus Civilisation and discuss methodologies to save the pre-historic site from further decay.

The decision was made at a meeting here on Wednesday which was presided over by DCO Abdul Aziz Uqaili. The meeting decided to invite archaeologists to attend the conference.

It also decided to organise a four-day Larkano Cultural Festival from January 15 to 18 at the open-air theatre in

Sachal Colony.
