All set for elections to Supreme Court Bar Association

LAHORE, Oct 27: Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) Secretary Amin Javed told reporters on Monday that only bar members would be allowed to enter polling stations on Tuesday (today) after a thorough verification.

He said polling for the elections in Lahore would be held at the Supreme Court Registry opposite the GPO. Polling will also be held on the supreme and high courts premises in Islamabad, Multan, Bahawalpur, Peshawar, Abbotabad, Karachi and Quetta from 8:30am to 4:30pm with an hour interval for prayers at 1pm.

Unofficial results will be announced after counting of votes on Tuesday evening and official results on Oct 31.

He said that 1,721 SCBA members would cast their votes for one post of president, four posts of vice presidents, one post of secretary and 14 seats of executive committee members. The SCBA has 852 registered members in Lahore, 280 Karachi, 230 Islamabad, 160 Peshawar, 80 Quetta, 73 Multan and 46 in Bahawalpur.

Ali Ahmed Kurd and M Zafar are contesting for the SCBA president office. Fifty candidates are in the run for 22 bar seats. Hafiz SA Rehman will act as returning officer while presidents of four high court bars will be presiding officers.

The candidates for the four seats of vice-presidents are: Muhammad Ayaz Khan Swati and Zahid Husain Malik (Balochistan), Muhammad Jamil Khan and M Saeed Akhtar (NWFP), Iqbal Mahmood Awan and Javed Jalal Mian (Punjab) and Muhammad Suhail Hayat Khan Rana and Sheikh Faqir Muhammad Javaid (Sindh).

Three candidates -- Qamar Zaman Qureshi, Shaukat Umar Pirzada and Syed Jamil Ahmed -- are contesting for the post of secretary, while Abdul Haq Malik, Tajammal Murad and Zulfikar Khalid Maluka are fighting for the post of additional secretary. Muhammad Rafi Siddiqui and Sheikh Ahsanuddin are contesting for finance secretary’s slot.

Thirty-two hopefuls are vying for 14 seats of executive committee member from all the four provinces. From Balochistan, the candidates are: Iftikharul Haq Khan, Jahanzaib Khan Jadoon, Muhammad Qahir Shah, Nasrallah Achakzai, Raja Aamir Abbas Hasan and Zahoor Ahmad Shahwani. Four candidates -- Afzal Gul, Ghulam Nabi, Noor Alam Khan and Shakeel Ahmad – are contesting for NWFP seats; while Haji Shafi Muhammad Chandio, Jawaid Ahmad Siddiqui, Shamsuddin Khalid, Ahmed Ansari and Ziaul Haq Makhdoom are vying for Sindh seats.
