KHAIRPUR: Call to cut defence expenditure

KHAIRPUR, Oct 28: Social workers and peace activists have stressed on creating conducive and peaceful atmosphere not only in Pakistan but all over the globe.

This was discussed at a seminar organised by the Pakistan Peace Coalition in collaboration with other NGOs on ‘Peace, not war, is required’ at the press club.

Social worker Sharafat Ali said that if the government reduces defence expenditure and spends that money on health and education then people will get relief plus facilities.

He said that a huge portion of budget was being spent on defence leaving behind peanut for social services and added that this leads to ignoring the other sectors and cropping up of crises.

Social activist Adam Malik and Prof Asad Raza Abidi said that America would never let Pakistan and India become friends.

They said that education, health and agriculture remain neglected, despite having huge canal system. Its pity that the country is unable to produce required wheat and quality cotton, they said.

Amjad Lashari, Jabbar Khaskheli, Fayaz Abbasi and others said that Pakistan Peace Coalition promotes and wants to spread the message of peace, not war. They said that politicians would never oppose war hence it is possible through people’s initiative.

Later, a concert was held wherein Sufi singer Ayaz Faqeer and others performed.

ACCIDENT: Two persons were killed and 19 others injured when a pickup overturned on Kumb-Nawabshah link road in jurisdiction of PS Thari Mirwah on Monday night.

A pickup carrying people from village Allah Rakhio Joyo near Shahpur Chakar to a shrine in Ranipur overturned as its tyre burst.

As a result, Riaz Joyo, 12, died on the spot and 20 others including Liaquat Joyo were injured. Those injured were taken to a hospital in Nawabshah but Liaquat Joyo died before reaching there.
