Zardari, Gilani greet Obama

ISLAMABAD, Nov 5: President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani have congratulated US President-elect Senator Barack Obama on his victory and expressed the hope that the US would “continue to be a source of global peace and new ideas for humanity”.

Pakistan’s Ambassador Husain Haqqani said in Washington that Mr Zardari had expressed the hope that relations between the two countries would further strengthen under the new American leadership, according to APP.“On behalf of the people and the government of Pakistan, and on my own behalf, I congratulate you on your election as the 44th president of the United States,” Mr Gilani said in a message to Mr Obama.

He said Pakistan and the United States shared common interests and objectives.

“I am pleased that during my visit to the United States last July, we had an opportunity to discuss issues with you pertaining to our bilateral relationship,” he said.

The prime minister said he looked forward to more opportunities of discussing with Mr Obama ways for further strengthening relations and promoting peace and stability in South Asia.

“Your election marks a new chapter in the remarkable history of the United States,” Mr Gilani said, adding that the ideas of democracy, liberty and freedom espoused by the US had been a source of inspiration for millions around the world.
