GCUF VC resigned after ‘life threats’
FAISALABAD, Nov 12: The Government College University Faisalabad Academic Staff Association (ASA) president claimed on Wednesday the varsity vice-chancellor resigned following life threats by some faculty members.
ASA president Dr Mudassar was addressing a meeting of the Action Committee, comprising faculty members in different disciplines, held at the GCUF on Wednesday. The committee has been formed in support of the resigning vice-chancellor, Dr Arif Ali Zaidi.
Dr Mudassar alleged the sacked director finance, director projects and campus development, intermediate section principal and a physical education lecturer had threatened the VC with dire consequences for snubbing them over some ‘malpractices and wrongdoings.’
The management had terminated the services of three of the accused for corruption, while the physical education teacher was still serving.
The ASA president called for setting up a committee to look into the alleged highhandedness of the accused faculty members who, he claimed, were also threatening him with dire consequences.
None of the accused was available for comments.
The meeting decided to intensify the drive and to organise a protest camp on the varsity campus daily till the VC’s restoration.
The committee decided that a teachers’ delegation would also apprise Punjab Governor Salmaan Taseer of the situation, who is also the varsity chancellor. The ASA has also written a letter to the chancellor expressing their concern over the situation.
Meanwhile, faculty members, non-teaching staff and students blocked traffic on Jhang
Road on Wednesday in protest against the vice-chancellor’s resignation.
