Altaf calls for imposition of agriculture tax

KARACHI, Nov 22: Muttahida Qaumi Movement chief Altaf Hussain has advocated imposition of tax on agricultural income and declared that, if voted to power, his party would impose it.

“The International Monetary Fund has suggested to Pakistan to broaden tax base and impose agriculture tax. However, it is surprising that neither the government nor opposition parties are willing to impose agriculture tax. I advise the government to impose it immediately,” said Mr Hussain.

Addressing a large gathering from London on phone on Saturday, he said that if voted to power across the country, the MQM would impose agriculture tax on all landlords and in case of default it would seize their land and distribute it among poor farmers.

The public reception was organised by the MQM at the Jinnah Ground to pay tribute to City Nazim Syed Mustafa Kamal, who was recently named by a foreign magazine among the three ‘mayors of the moment’ in the world.

Mr Hussain said that instead of levying agriculture tax, common citizens were being burdened by taxes.
