DERA ISMAIL KHAN: Violence forcing people to leave Dera

DERA ISMAIL KHAN, Nov 25: Lack of security and growing acts of terrorism and sectarian-related violence in the district during the past one year have forced many residents to migrate to safer places.

Residents said the number of migrating people was increasing, with at least 300 families migrated to Punjab, this year.

These families have gone to Bhakkar, Darya Khan, Dera Ghazi Khan, Islamabad and other cities, while some affluent families have purchased land in Lahore, Islamabad and other places as the government is alleged to have failed to check the terrorist acts in their home town.

Talking to this correspondent, members of some families said the government had failed to provide them security. “We are scared for the safety of our children”, they said, adding they could not send their children to schools because of fear for their lives.

On the other hand, DIG Ishtiaq Marwat told Dawn that the government had been trying its best to secure the lives and properties of the residents. He said shortage of staff had marred the police performance.
