ISLAMABAD, Dec 4: The Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Ms Sherry Rehman on Thursday announced a compensation of Rs100,000 for the family of a TV employee Mohammad Azam Khan who committed suicide after non-payment of salary for five months.

“This tragedy could have been avoided. Non-payment of salary is not only unethical, it is also distressing for employees that demonstrate their dedication and commitment to journalism, which is a very demanding profession,” said the Information Minister extending her condolences to the family of Azam Khan.

Ms Sherry Rehman also called up Mr Imtinan Shahid, Chief Editor and owner of the Khabrain Media Group that had employed Late Mohammad Azam Khan. She discussed the issue of outstanding salaries for the Group's employees. The Information Minister was assured by Mr Shahid that the Group would resolve the matter at the earliest.

“The issue of a just wage system for media persons is important for our government. Our continued stress is not only because of the involvement of labour dimension, it is also because economic security is important for independent journalism. The business of news and information is different from other industries because of the social aspect of its output. All professionals who are associated with this extremely important field that is also described as the fourth estate, must get their due compensation for the hard work they put in their work. This minimises chances for corruption and makes positive contribution to the development of quality journalism.”

Ms Sherry Rehman said that it is important for media houses to revisit their priorities. Profit is a vital element of any business activity, but it is equally important for industries to contribute to social and economic progress. This only comes from a just opportunities and rewards order. Our government treats it as a key part of our economic agenda and we will continue to pursue the issue of better wages across all industries in the country.”
