Mohsin Zafar wins Governor Punjab golf

LAHORE, Dec 14: Mohsin Zafar of Lahore Gymkhana won the 25th Governor Punjab Golf tournament despite being locked equal with Hussain Hamid (Royal Palm) with a three-day aggregate of 211, each at the Lahore Gymkhana course on Sunday.

Both of them matched each other stroke for stroke and their scores were level even after the final hole.

In such a case, the tournament rules require comparison over the last 18 holes and if they are still level thereafter, then their scores over the last 36 holes are compared. Fortunately for Mohsin his score was one stroke better enabling him to claim the title.

Despite his stroke of luck, Mohsin played extremely well in this tournament over the past three days, producing cards of 70, 73 and net 68 to earn an aggregate of 5-under par 211.

Except for the lacklustre second round, he remained in the race and his round of net 67 on the final day was ample demonstration of his golfing prowess. Hussain is still a youngster and during the current year, whenever he has competed in any golf tournament, he has been amongst the contenders.

In the net event, Mohsin Zafar had a net aggregate score of 211, the runner-up Hussain Hamid also had the same score while Mohammad Hassan Saeed of Gymkhana came third with a net 216, his daily rounds comprising of net 72, 73 and 71.

For the overnight leader, Aadil Jehangir, the final round turned out to be a miserable one. After having excelled over two days, he somehow lost focus towards the close of his first nine holes and shockingly double bogied the par-4, 6th and the par-5, 8th. The disaster helped his competitors to take over the pace.

Mohammad Safdar of Gujranwala emerged as the winner of the gross event with a three-day aggregate of 217. Aadil came second and Mohammad Waqas third.

Competition in the invitational event was also fierce and with Shafqat Rana, Jehangir Aziz, Pervez Mir, Dr Shamshad and Mir Maaz producing good rounds. Ultimately, however, Mir Maaz won the first gross and Murad A. Khan came first in net.
