No evidence provided by India yet, says Gilani

ISLAMABAD, Dec 16: Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani said on Tuesday that Pakistan had initiated actions under the UN Securit Council resolution but was still awaiting Indian response to its offer for formation of a joint investigation commission and a visit by a high-level Pakistani delegation to New Delhi for investigation into the Mumbai terrorist attacks.

Mr Gilani also said the Indian government had not yet provided any evidence to help it prosecute the accused. The prime minister was talking to Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt who had called on him at the PM’s House.

According to a handout, Mr Gilani said: “The president and I had … assured them of Pakistan’s complete support in investigating the attacks.”

He called for Pakistan’s inclusion in the EU’s GSP-plus scheme to grant greater access to Pakistani products in European Union markets. He said helping Pakistan economically would serve ther common counter-terrorism agenda.

It may be mentioned that Sweden will assume the EU presidency in July next year.

Mr Gilani said he appreciated Sweden’s strong support for restoration of democracy in Pakistan and considered Sweden an important partner both at the EU platform and bilaterally.

Mr Bildt commended Pakistan’s balanced and restrained reaction in the wake of the Mumbai attacks.

He stressed the need for Pakistan and India to work together to defuse the crisis and bring the perpetrators of the Mumbai attacks to justice.

He acknowledged that no other country had suffered more from terrorism than Pakistan and assured the prime minister his country’s support in the EU to help Pakistan to overcome its economic difficulties and equip its law-enforcement agencies.
