Mid-term polls to discourage adventurers: JI

HYDERABAD, Jan 9: Jamaat-i-Islami Naib Ameer Liaquat Baloch has said that when a government fails to deliver the goods and people start hating rulers, mid-term election is a democratic course to raise a bulwark against any adventurer.

He said that due to people’s love and sympathy following the assassination of Benazir Bhutto, the Pakistan People’s Party had secured an impressive victory in general elections. However, he said, negative attitude of President Asif Ali Zardari had turned the love of the people into hatred in a few months.

He was talking to journalists after leading a rally organised by the Jamiat Tuleba-i-Arabia against Israel and to express solidarity with the people of Palestine. The rally started from Hyder Chowk and terminated at the press club.

Mr Baloch said that it was the duty of Pakistan to activate the Organisation of Islamic Countries leadership and Muslim leaders to adopt effective measures to stop atrocities unleashed by the Zionist state against Palestinians.

He said that the entire nation was protesting against the genocide of Palestinians, including women and children, at the hands of the Zionist state which enjoyed the support of the USA but the government was doing nothing.“Our rulers have failed to take any clear stand on Mumbai carnage and Ajmal Kasab, therefore, it will be wishful thinking to expect that they will take any clear stand on the Palestinian issue,” Mr Baloch said.

He said that it was high time that the democratic government discarded the policies of Pervez Musharraf and evolved its own policies on the floor of parliament.

He urged the rulers to end military operation in the tribal areas and restore independent judiciary.

The leadership of Iran, Indonesia, Malaysia, Bangladesh, Saudi Arabia, the UAE and other Muslim countries should strive to end Israeli aggression and provide relief to the Palestinian people, he said and added that Egypt and Sweden could also play an important role in this regard.

Pakistan, he said, held an important position in the Islamic world and therefore it should perform the role of a spokesman of Millat-i-Islamia.

Answering a question about the implementation of a resolution adopted at the joint session of parliament and an all-party conference, the JI leader alleged that Asif Zardari-led government did not want to empower parliament and even the prime minister was not being allowed to use his powers as chief executive.

He said that the government was bound by the NRO, international agreements and those forces which had stood guarantee for its implementation, therefore, it could not implement the resolutions.

Under US and Indian dictation, the government had banned social welfare organisations, Mr Baloch alleged and added that the government was fast losing its popularity.

Answering another question about the award of Hilal Quaid-i-Azam to Richard Boucher, he termed it as an insult to the people of Pakistan and philosophy of Quaid-i-Azam.

Answering yet another question about Qazi Hussain Ahmed’s demand for mid-term election, he said that when a democratic government had failed to deliver, a confrontation was going on between the federation and Punjab, other federating units were in direct conflict with the federation and people were groaning under price hike and maladministration, an adventurer could take advantage of such a situation.

Mr Baloch said that a new mandate and a new leadership was a better option.

He said the decision to remove Mehmood Durrani was correct but if he was reinstated under US pressure, the government would lose its remaining credibility if there was any.
