Strike against tribal chief’s murder

UMERKOT, Jan 10: A complete strike was observed in Dhoronaro town on Saturday and scores of people brought out a rally and held a demonstration in protest against targeted killing of the chieftain of Chopan community, Ismail Chopan.

The protesters led by Faiz Chopan raised slogans against Sanghar and Umerkot police and called upon the authorities to ensure that the killers were arrested immediately and the false case against Chopan was withdrawn.

They said that police of both the districts were dilly-dallying over the case under the pretext of dispute over jurisdiction.

Umerkot DPO said that he and DPO of Sanghar had adopted a joint strategy to nab the culprits and in this regard, teams led by SP investigation Umerkot Imdad Solangi and SP investigation Sanghar Abid Qaimkhani had been formed.

Sanghar police claimed to have arrested four more people, two of them identified as Khuda Bux and Mohammad Rahim Rajar.

MNA Nawab Yusuf Talpur said that the killing of Ismail, Chopans’ chieftain, was a terrorist attack and should be tried in an anti-terrorist court. He said that he had approached police of both the districts the day he was kidnapped but police failed to perform their duty. He had also informed Sindh chief minister about the incident, he said.

Sources said that the home minister had issued orders to DPOs of both the districts to immediately arrest the culprits and there were unconfirmed reports that he would visit Dhoronaro to express condolence with the bereaved family.
