HYDERABAD: Police clueless about youth’s disappearance

HYDERABAD, Jan 16: Despite the passage of around five months, the Hyderabad police are still in the dark about the whereabouts of a student of a private university, Maqsood Samejo, who went missing from Bhittai Nagar on August 27, 2008.

Police have not been able to find any clue in this respect so far although several suspects have been picked up for interrogation. Two more suspects, who are university students, have been arrested by the Bhittai Nagar police.

Majid, a student of the Mehran University of Engineering and Technology, and Javed, a student of Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences, have been remanded in police custody till Jan 20. However, Samejo is a BBA student of a private university.

“The two students were in touch with Samejo when he was kidnapped that’s why we are interrogating them”, said an investigating wing official. He said that some other suspects were picked up by the police for interrogation but it did not yield any result.

Police officials are not sure whether it is really a case of kidnapping for ransom. For quite some time after Samejo’s mysterious disappearance, the police did not event take interest because they were expecting that he would return on his own and if it is a kidnapping case then his captors would establish a contact.

“Kidnappers always contact the hostage’s family if they are interested in ransom but in this case neither any contact has been established nor the man has rejoined his family. I am still unsure about the fact that it’s a kidnapping for ransom case,” said the official.

Samejo, according to an FIR lodged by his uncle, Nawaz Samejo, was kidnapped on August 27 near Mehran hotel, located near Gulistan-i-Sajjad. His cousin, Shahid Samejo, was accompanying him at that time and he had gone for taking something from a nearby shop but when he returned he didn’t find Samejo. Later, his car was found near Al-Manzar, Jamshoro. Shahid Samejo has also been interrogated in the case.

DPO Hyderabad Ghulam Nabi Memon may appear before the Supreme Court in connection with this case as reports said that apex court had taken a suo motu notice of Samejo’s case. When contacted, the DPO avoided sharing details about the case.
