KARACHI, Jan 17: A two-month-old girl was burnt to death on Saturday when a fire broke out in a shanty in Gulshan-i-Iqbal.

Witnesses said that the fire broke out in one of the huts situated on a 250-yard plot (A-18) in Block 13-D a little after midday and quickly engulfed the adjoining huts. Fire brigade sources said that the cause of fire could not be ascertained.

They said that the inhabitants rushed out of the walled plot, but an infant remained trapped in the fire and got burnt to death.

The Aziz Bhattti police said that the plot belonged to Arif Siddiqui and his watchman, Bashir, was living there with his family. They said that the relatives of the watchman, who hailed from Southern Punjab, were also living in the huts.

The police said that the victim child, Aleesha, was the daughter of the watchman’s relative, Mohammed Afzal.

The charred body was shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for medico-legal proceedings.
