KARACHI: Elderly man killed by robbers

KARACHI, Jan 23: An elderly man was killed by bandits during an attempted robbery in Baldia town on Friday morning, police and witnesses said.

Police in the area said that 80-year-old Hasanullah, a vegetable seller, went to a restaurant to eat breakfast when he was accosted by unidentified suspects and asked to empty his pockets. On his refusal, the suspects struck him on the head with the baton of a weapon, causing him to collapse.

The suspects then escaped from the vicinity. The victim was taken to Civil Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police said the victim’s family refused to have a post-mortem examination carried out and took away the body for burial.

Elsewhere, a two-year-old boy was killed when he fell into a storm-water drain in City Railway Colony. Edhi sources said that the boy, Mohammad Farhan, reportedly left his house in Railway Colony on Friday afternoon to play, but never returned home.

When his family searched for him, they learnt that a boy matching his description had fallen into a drain near the Railway Colony bridge. Edhi volunteers and fire department rescue workers were still searching for the boy’s body at the time this report was filed.

Manager shot dead

A senior manager of the Pak Suzuki Company was killed in an attempted robbery by unknown suspects in PECHS on Friday.

Police said that Shahid Siddiqui, 50, was intercepted by two suspects riding a motorcycle in PECHS Block 2 near Lines Area. The suspects tried to snatch the victim’s cellphone and other valuables and then apparently shot him when he resisted.

Mr Siddiqui was rushed to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre with gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead on arrival. The deceased was a resident of PECHS.

SP Jamshad Javed Akber Riaz said he had suspended, and reverted, the in-charge of a nearby police post for dereliction of duty.

A spokesman for the Pak Suzuki Company said that Mr Siddiqui was a senior manager (administration) of the Suzuki motorcycle division. He was on his way to meet some friends in the area when unknown suspects intercepted and shot him while attempting to snatch his valuables.

An FIR was not lodged till the filing of this report, as the friends and family of the victim were still in shock.

Man injured resisting robbery

A man was seriously injured while resisting a robbery attempt in Lyari on Friday morning.

Police said two suspects intercepted the young man, Munir Ahmed, in Baghdadi area, and attempted to snatch his cellphone and cash.

On his putting up resistance, the suspects shot Mr Ahmed and fled with his valuables. The victim was rushed to Civil Hospital, where he was admitted for treatment.

Two killed in accidents

Two people were killed and another injured in separate traffic accidents in different parts of the city on Friday.

Abdul Qayoum, a motorcyclist, died when a fast-moving truck hit him near Lyari Degree College. Police said the truck driver escaped from the scene. The victim was taken to Civil Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

In a separate accident, a 65-year-old man was knocked down by a fast-moving minibus near Habib Bank Chowrangi. Police said the victim, identified as Asghar Ali, was on his motorcycle when a minibus hit him and then sped away.

The victim died on the spot. His body was sent to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for legal formalities. Mr Ali was a resident of Orangi Town, sector 11-A.

A middle-aged man was also seriously injured in a traffic accident in DHA on Friday. Police said that Mohammad Rizwan, 45, was injured when he was hit by a fast-moving car on Khayaban-i-Shahbaz. Police said the driver of the car managed to escape the scene, while the injured man was rushed to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for treatment.
