PEL, Fata win matches in U-21 football

LAHORE, Jan 26: Pak Elektron limited (PEL) outclassed Sindh 3-0 while rank outsiders Fata kicked out titlist Wohaib FC 5-4 on penalties after a one-all draw to move into the semi-finals of the third National Under-21 soccer championship at Jinnah Stadium, Islamabad, on Monday.

The PEL-Sindh clash turned out to be a totally one-sided affair as the Lahore-based winners allowed the provincial team with no room to score.

It was a penalty-kick that paved the way for PEL to march on.

FIFA Referee Asif bin Younus penalised Sindh’s defenders for dangerous play inside the box when they flattened PEL’s frontrunner Rashid.

The resulting kick was converted by Rashid in the 20th minute.

Sindh suffered more distress in the 32nd minute when Rashid consolidated the lead with another powerful drive from 35 metres to beat their keeper all ends up and Saqib Hanif rounded off the tally in the 59th minute when he raced on to a stray ball to slam it into the left corner.

Holders Wohaib lost to FAT A despite getting a penalty-kick during injury time. The match between the two skilled outfits produced two goals in the second session.

Fata landed the opener through striker Akhtar Ali in the 54th minute but midfielder Jibran Butt drew level in the second minute of injury time.

Penalty kicks were awarded but the scoreline changed to 4-4 with Zulqarnain, Mohammad Saqib and Mohammad Suleman finding the net for Wohaib and Jalaluddin, Mohammad Idrees, Akhtar Ali and Mohammad Salim doing the same for Fata.

Then Raqab Khan scored the winning goal for Fata during the one by one system.

There will be no match on Tuesday. The event resumes on Wednesday with the playing of two semi-finals –– NWFP v PEL at 12.30 and Punjab v Fata at 2.30pm.—Agencies
