PESHAWAR: Brick tax imposed in Peshawar

PESHAWAR, Jan 30: The Town-4 has decided to impose tax on movement of bricks from the brick kilns, situated in limits of the town municipal authority.

Sources told Dawn that the decision was taken in a state of compulsion as the town was facing serious financial constraints and was unable to complete its ongoing developmental schemes in different areas.

They said the provincial government had assured the town nazim to provide a fund of Rs50 million for meeting the requirements but the amount had so far not provided.

“A buyer would have to pay Rs10 on purchase of 1,000 bricks from the local furnaces,” an official said, adding that it would help reduce the financial burden on the TMA. The matters, he said, had already been discussed in a meeting of the town council and majority of the council members had approved it.Town Convener Malak Aman, when contacted, told this correspondent that the town was facing financial problems and if the provincial government didn’t provide the funds, the town would be unable to carry out municipal services in true sense.

He demanded of the provincial government to support the town as it had no income generating sources and the area was very vast to cover in a befitting manner.
