Madiha Latif steals show on opening day: Inter-varsity Girls Athletics

KARACHI, Jan 30: Madiha Latif of Punjab University dominated the track and field events winning three of the nine finals on the opening day of the two-day Pakistan Inter-university girls’ athletics championship which commenced at the Karachi University track on Friday.

She sprinted to victory in 200 metres clocking 28.50 seconds. Her teammate Asma finished second while Naseem of GCU Faisalabad was third.

Madiha’s second success came in the shot put when she heaved the iron ball to 11.02 metres. Hina Rafiq of Sindh University and Rizwana of Punjab University seized second and third places respectively.

She rounded off the day claiming the javelin throw event by throwing it to 34.36 metres. Nazish and Afshan, both of GCU Faisalabad, finished second and third respectively.

Madiha’s teammate Shumaila Sattar claimed the high jump and triple jump events while Fakhra Perveen did GCU Faisalabad proud by landing 800 and 5000 metres.

Nasreen of the GCU Faisalabad won the 100 metres hurdles clocking 19.00 seconds. Rabia and Shumaila Sattar, both of Punjab University, secured second and third slots.

Defending champions Punjab University is leading the table with 118 points. They are closely followed by GCU Faisalabad with 95 points. Hosts Karachi University is lying third with 20 points.

Teams of 13 universities are participating in the two-day meet. These include Karachi University, Punjab University, NED University, B. Z. University Multan, GCU Faisalabad, Sindh University Jamshoro, Engineering and Technology University Hyderabad, Shah Latif University Khairpur, Sir Syed University, Mehran University Jamshoro, Quaid-i-Awam University Nawabshah, Agriculture University Faisalabad and Islamia University Bahawalpur.

Earlier, vice chancellor of the Karachi University Prof. Dr. Pirzada Qasim Raza Siddiqui, inaugurated the meet. Mariam Khan of the KU took the oath on behalf of participants.

Finals:

200 metres:

1-Madiha Latif (Punjab University) 28.50 seconds; 2-Asma (Punjab University) 30.90 seconds; -3 Naseem (GCU Faisalabad) 31.30 seconds.

800 metres:

1-Fakhira Perveen (GCU Faisalabad) 2:50.60 seconds; 2-Salma (GCU Faisalabad) 2:52.30 seconds; 3-Zahra Murtaza (BZ Multan) 2:54.10 seconds.

4 x 400 metres relay:

1-Punjab University 05: 05.60 seconds; 2-GCU Faisalabad 05:11.40 seconds; 3-Karachi University 05:15.60 seconds.

100 metres hurdles:

1-Nasreen (GCU Faisalabad) 19.00 seconds; 2-Rabia (Punjab University) 19.90 seconds; 3-Shumaila Sattar (Punjab University) 21.10 seconds.

High jump:

1-Shumaila Sattar (Punjab University) 1.43 metres; 2-Madiha Latif (Punjab University) 1.40 metres; 3- Omema (NED University) 1.40 metres.

Shot put:

1-Madiha Latif (Punjab University) 11.02 metres; 2-Hina Rafiq (Sindh University Jamshoro) 8.66 metres; 3-Rizwana (Punjab University) 8.56 metres.

Javalin Throw:

1-Madiha Latif (Punjab University) 34.36 metres; 2-Nazish (GCU Faisalabad) 28.86 metres; 3-Afshan (GCU Faisalabad) 28.32 metres.

Triple jump:

1-Shumaila (Punjab University) 9.53 metres; 2- Omema (NED University); 3-Naseem (GCU Faisalabad) 8.85 metres.

5,000 metres:

1-Fakhra (GCU Faisalabad) 25:18.60 seconds; 2- Salma (GCU Faisalabad) 25:19.10 seconds; 3-Sumaira Rajab (Punjab University) 25:3010 seconds.
