26 Pakistani fishermen arrested by Indian navy

THATTA, Feb 2: The Indian Navy arrested 26 fishermen and took away four fishing vessels and their catch worth millions of rupees from the Pakistan territorial waters in the Arabian Sea on Monday.

Pakistan Fisherfolk Forum chairman Mohammed Ali Shah told Dawn that the fishermen, who belonged to coastal villages of Thatta, had been fishing in the Kajhar creek when they were taken away at gunpoint.

Mr Shah condemned the violation of Pakistan’s territorial waters by the Indian Naval personnel and called upon the government to get the fishermen released.

He demanded proper demarcation of the territorial limits in the sea to save poor fishermen from suffering such ordeals.

This correspondent tried but failed to get comments from law-enforcement personnel in the district on the incident.
