GUJRANWALA: Seven hurt as rivals exchange fire

GUJRANWALA, Feb 18: Seven people, including a passer-by, sustained injuries, two of them serious, in an exchange of fire between two rival groups in Tetley village Naushera Virkan on Wednesday.

MPA Amanat Ali Virk and Chaudhry Malik of Bhadrey groups had a rivalry since long and involved in exchange of fires in the past. On Wednesday, both the groups had an exchange of fire for almost two hours as a result of which four members of the MPA group, two of Malik group and a passer-by, Munir Ahmad, sustained bullet injuries.

They were taken to the DHQ Hospital where the condition of one Amin was stated to be serious. Later, he was removed to the Mayo Hospital in Lahore.

Shopkeepers closed their shops and took refuge at safe places as soon as firing started. It is learnt that traffic remained suspended on Sheikhupura road, Tetley-Naushera Virkan road, Tetley-Kamoki and Tetley-Gujranwala road for more than two and a half hours.

Senior police officers reached the pot along with heavy contingent of Elite Force and arrested six members of both the groups.

SULTAN RAHI CASE: The murder case of noted Punjabi films actor Sultan Rahi was sent to the sessions court by Saddar police after eight and a half years on Wednesday.

Police declared one Yousaf of Ladheywala village the main accused. However, Sultan Rahi's driver Haji Hasan, who was driving the car when the incident took place, claimed that Yousaf was not the killer. Sultan Rahi was shot dead by unidentified people on January 2, 1996, near Alipur by-pass chowk when he was on his way to Lahore from Islamabad.

JAIL INCIDENT: The anti-terrorism court No 1 adjourned on Wednesday the hearing of Sialkot jail incident case for Feb 24.

Counsel for the accused pleaded that his clients were senior government officers and could not be tried without prior permission of the government. However, the counsel for complainants said it was being done to delay the case.

HUNGER STRIKE: Shahid alias Kala who went on hunger strike against the inhuman attitude of jail officials a few days ago ended his strike when jail officials resolved his problems and shifted him to another barrack.
