GUJRANWALA, Feb 26: The Anti-Terrorism Court No 1 on Thursday continued hearing of the Sialkot jail incident and re-issued the arrest warrants against the former Gujranwala DIG, former Sialkot DPO, Gujrat DPO and dozen other officials.

The judge also directed the Sialkot DPO to get compliance of the arrest warrants by himself. Earlier, the judge withdrew their warrants when the public prosecutor requested court that permission of their arrest had been sought from the federal government and the arrest warrants should be withdrawn.

Accepting the plea, the judge withdrew their arrest warrants. But the prosecution opposed it and pleaded that their arrest warrants should be re-issued.

The judge rejected the plea of former Sialkot Civil Hospital MS Dr Firdaus that since his name was not included in the chargesheet the order for his arrest should be withdrawn. The judge ordered medical examination of accused Shahid alias Kala to assess his age. Judge Iftikhar Husain Shah adjourned the case till March 6.

ACQUITTED: A local court on Thursday acquitted four constables involved in a murder case after their compromise with heirs of the deceased.

According to the prosecution, constables - Mahboob Ahmad, Nasarullah, Pervaiz, and Karamat Ali had signalled motorcycle rider Sarfraz Ahmad to stop at a picket at Khiali on Oct 14, 2002. The policemen shot dead Sarfraz when he did not stop the bike.

RETRIEVED: A bailiff raided the Sadar police station and recovered two brothers who were locked up there without any justification. They were produced in court here on Thursday.

The judge summoned the SHO and other policemen for Friday. Police picked up Munawar and Muazzam from their house at the behest of their rival and detained them in the lock-up.

NEWSMEN: The local journalists protested here on Thursday against a member of the District Bar Association, who allegedly beat up one of their colleagues and kept him into illegal confinement. The journalists threatened that they would boycott the bar and police activities, if a case was not registered against the lawyer within 24 hours.

At a meeting presided over by Akram Malik, the newsmen said a court reporter of an Urdu daily was performing his duty at the district court when lawyer Zaighamullah manhandled him over a minor issue and kept him in illegal confinement for hours on Wednesday. They met DPO Saud Aziz and demanded stern action against the lawyer.
