DERA ISMAIL KHAN: Universities to scrap 'self-finance system'

DERA ISMAIL KHAN, April 21: The government has decided to scrap self-financed education system at the university level from the next academic session. The system would be replaced by regular evening programmes in addition to the usual morning classes, well-placed sources told this correspondent.

Fresh teaching staff would be recruited on a contract basis to run the evening programmes as the existing faculty at the universities would not be allowed to keep both jobs in hand. Only the P.hd staff would be allowed to teach in the evening programmes with additional allowance.

It may be mentioned that most universities were earning handsome amount under the self-financed schemes, ploughing them back into development activities. They also used this additional income on promoting the academic environment.

With the end of this programme and introduction of regular evening programmes, universities would not be able to run morning and evening programmes simultaneously by their own resources. The Higher Education Commission (HEC) would bear the financial burden of universities in this regard.
