HYDERABAD: Sida seeks record of water flow
HYDERABAD, May 4: Sindh Irrigation and Drainage Authority managing-director Ali Mohammad Baloch has instructed directors of the Left Bank Canal Area Water Board , Nara Canal Area Water Board and the Ghotki Feeder Canal Area Water Board to record weekly discharge at upstream of barrages to ensure that the canals got water in accordance with shares allocated in the 1991 water accord.
According to a spokesman for Sida, these instructions were issued by Mr Baloch at a briefing session held in Badin a couple of days back. The meeting discussed water situation in the district and other relevant issues like the Left Bank Outfall Drain and collection of Abyana.
The Sida managing-director and LBCAWB director briefed the participants about the water availability in the canals of the area water board. They said that the shortage at the Kotri Barrage was about 70 per cent which had result in the closure of the New Fuleli Wah and the Akram Wah was receiving one-third of its share as per the water accord.
The NCAWB director told the meeting about the present position of the LBOD structure and informed that the NCAWB and Sida were making efforts to get the required funds to start the work of strengthening and rehabilitating the structure affected by monsoon rains.
Meanwhile, the Sida managing-director also asked the director (regulation), PID, Karachi, to provide daily discharges of barrages to monitor the availability of water.
