SUKKUR, May 24: A meeting held at the office of the Ghotki DPO on Monday decide that a jirga would be convened to resolve the dispute between Mahar and Almani tribes over the marriage of Shaista Almani and Balkhsher Mahar.

The meeting noted that since the Sindh High Court had banned the holding of jirgas, the government would be approached to seek a relaxation. The meeting, attended by Ghotki DPO Aftab Ahmad Halepoto, Jacobabad TPO Abdul Qayoom Pitafi, Ghotki District Naib Nazim Abdul Bari Pitafil, and tribal chiefs Rahim Bux Bozdar, Usman Almani, Ahmad Ali Pitafi and Sikandar Khan Korai, said that the date of jirga and names of Ameen and Mansif would be announced at another meeting to be held soon.

The meeting further decided that Mahar and Almani tribesmen would not resort to clashes and they would wait for the final decision. It said that action would be taken against those who violated the decision.

A sense of insecurity is still found in the Ghotki district after the tribal clashes despite efforts to resolve the dispute. Police and Rangers' personnel are patrolling the tense area.

According to informed sources, Sardar Usman Almani and Sardar Ahmad Ali Pitafi have separately met Sardar Ali Gohar Mahar and Sardar Mohammad Bux Mahar and the tribal chiefs have showed their willingness to end the dispute.

Meanwhile, a group of armed persons attacked the Hussain Bux Korai village on Sunday night and opened indiscriminate fire which was returned by villagers. A police party also reached at the scene and exchanged fire with the attackers for about 20 minutes after which the miscreants fled.

Elders of the Korai tribe on Monday met at the residence of Ghulam Rasool Korai to discuss the situation. They said that they had no concern with the Almani-Mahar dispute that was why they did not retaliate.

They said that due to the clashes in the area, people had gone short of ration as they could not go out of their villages. They said that they even could not take children and women to hospital.

POLIO: DCO Abdul Qadir Mangi has convened a meeting on May 28 to review the polio eradication programme in the district. A press release said that the health department had decided to approach 188,578 children for vaccination during the polio eradication campaign to be launched from June 1 to 3.

According to the EDO health the target of vaccination would be achieved by engaging 506 polio teams. A seminar on the subject will also be organized by the health department at the Sardar Ghulam Mohammad Mahar Medical College on May 29.
