SANGHAR: 12 watercourses without water for five years

SANGHAR, May 31: Tail-end farmers of the Sui Kunder Branch, Tando Adam irrigation sub-division-II, have demanded the water supply to their watercourses.

Talking to journalists in Tando Adam on Monday, Mir Hassan Mari Union Council Naib Nazim Manzoor Ahmad Jamali, Wazir Ali Hingoro, Allah Bux Brohi and others said that no water had been supplied to 12 watercourses at the tail-end of the branch for five years.

There are 50 watercourses at the tail-end of the Sui Kundar Branch. The farmers said that due to the non-supply of water, more than 6,000 acres had become barren and added that a drought-like situation was prevailing in the area.

They regretted that there was no water even to grow fodder for cattle which had compelled the farmers to shift their animals to other places. The situation in Dukand and Gular dehs was the worst, they further said.

They said that women and children had to fetch drinking water in pitchers and cans from remote areas. They regretted that they had resorted to protests and sent applications to higher authorities but to no avail.

The farmers said that the Sui Kunder Branch originated from the Rohri Canal which had sufficient water. However, they alleged, influential landlords had tampered with their modules in connivance with irrigation officials, depriving tail-end growers of their water share.

They appealed to the Sindh governor, chief minister and the secretary for irrigation to redress their grievances and send a team to the area to know about the situation.

ARRESTED: Five persons were arrested for poaching grey partridges, quails and other birds near Jamrao head on Monday. A case was registered at the Mangli police station. Hunted birds were recovered from the possession of the arrested persons by game inspectors Shafique Ahmad and Ghulam Mustafa Nizamani. Poaching material was also confiscated.

POLIO: A procession was taken out from the press club to the civil hospital here on Monday to create awareness among people about polio.

The procession was led by District Naib Nazim Mehmood Ahmad Rajput, EDO, health, Syed Iqbal Shah, and others. Speakers on the occasion called upon parents to vaccinate their children against polio in the three-day campaign against the disease, starting from June 1.
