SUKKUR: 20pc water shortage persists at Sukkur Barrage

SUKKUR, July 14: About 15 to 20 per cent shortage of water is still prevailing at the Sukkur Barrage and likely to continue up to July 22. On Wednesday, the Guddu Barrage upstream flow was recorded at 145,000 cusecs of water and downstream at 111,000 cusecs of water.

At the Sukkur Barrage, upstream flow remained 95,000 cusecs of water and downstream 36,000 cusecs of water. Some 10,000 cusecs of water, to be released from the Chashma Barrage, will reach Sukkur on July 18 and 10,000 more cusecs, released from Tarbela Dam, is expected to reach here on 20 after which the water position at the Sukkur Barrage would improve.

According to the irrigation officials, Khirthar, Rice and the North- Western canals are the most affected ones and rice is the worst affected crop. If water position at the Sukkur Barrage improved on July 22, extra water would be released into the canals of the rice producing areas, they added.

ELECTRICITY: Meanwhile, Hesco has not restored power supply of 11,000kv to the Sukkur Barrage through its original source, the city grid, but power to the barrage is being supplied from the line of Bachal Shah Miani. As a result, huge power fluctuation is being experienced and heavy-duty machinery of the barrage is not properly working.

KILLED: One person was gunned down by armed persons in Aijaz Jakhrani village in the Bahoo Khoso police jurisdiction, Jacobabad district, on Wednesday. Mehboob Lashari, Noor Mohammad Lashari, Khair Din Lashari and an unknown man allegedly shot at and killed Din Mohammad Brohi and fled.

Taj Mohammad Brohi, the brother of the deceased, has lodged an FIR with police against the four accused. The reason behind the murder is said to be old enmity.

PRISON RIOT: Some 40 prisoners of Sukkur Central Jail-II were lodged in solitary confinement after they took to rioting on Tuesday night. The riot erupted when the jail authorities tried to shift nine prisoners to other districts.

The prisoners resisted the move and a riot took place in which three prisoners, Jani Khoso, Dhani Bux Jagirani and Mohammad Panah Abro, were injured and shifted to jail hospital where condition of Khoso is said to be critical.

Jail authorities claimed that Khoso, Jagirani and Mohammad Panah Abro had tried to commit suicide and added that a case had been registered against them with the "C" section police. However, the prisoners claiming that the three inmates had been injured in police torture.
