GUJRANWALA: Three killed as wagon rams into a tree

GUJRANWALA, Aug 1: Three people were killed while 15 others sustained injuries, four of them serious, on Sunday in an accident on the GT Road near Kamoki. A fast travelling wagon (AJK-6321), going to Gujranwala from Lahore, rammed into a roadside tree.

Consequently, Rana Zahid Chiragh, Amjad Chughtai of Lahore and an unidentified person died instantly while 15 others, including half a dozen women and children, sustained injuries.

They were rushed to the local DHQ Hospital while Tayyab, Miskeen, Sodi Khan and Shamim Bibi were shifted to Mayo Hospital, Lahore, in critical condition. Police have registered a case against absconding vehicle crew.

ARRESTED: The district police on Sunday claimed to have arrested two activists of a banned religious outfit after a brief encounter near Mandiala Tega, Wahando. DPO Saud Aziz said that accused Maulvi Muhammad Arif and Muhammad Kabir Ambalvi were active members of Lashker-i-Tayyaba, who got training in Afghanistan.

He said that on a tip-off that the accused were present at Mandiala Tega, a police team besieged the area and asked them to surrender. But they opened fire on police which was returned. However, after a brief shootout, the accused laid down their arms.

The DPO said the police had also recovered two stolen cars, motorcycles, mobile phones and illicit arms from their possession. He said the arrested accused were involved in several dacoity and robbery incidents. A case has been registered against them.
